011: Behind my back!

I finally found a screen recorder for PC that works the way I want it to, so now I can record tutorials on my main DAW. So to try it out, I've decided to show my productional flaws by letting you in on the whole arrangement and the parts of my new single Airbase - Back.

Presented in 720p using Ableton Live 8.

If the video shows up in SD, click "HD" in the bottom right corner.

hey Jazper, Im just new to production (1 month), thanks to you I started to believe I can make some tunes myself in the future :) There is so little tutorials showing trance projects step by step, I even went from Cubase to Ableton because of your tutorials.

Anyways, I had no idea it looks so easy, some reverb, ping pong, comp & done. I just need to change my 7yo comp, because it cant handle more then 3 vstis with long reverbs etc ;)

BTW: This Back tune is great, expecially Break Lead, I copied it myself for sake of learning. I dont get excatly same tone sound from Gladiator, but Im still learning, arp is just lovely there.

If anyone wants to have the bass mono effect that's used in the tutorial but doesn't want to get the freeware plugin (I like to use Ableton's own plugs only if I can get away with it), you can get the same effect using an audio effect rack.

Chain 1: EQ8 with low pass of the low frequencies + Utility set to monoize the signal
Chain 2: EQ8 with high pass of all the frequencies except for the low passed ones in Chain 1.

Ta da!

Hey Jezper.

Amazing tutorial! Really opened up my eyes to what I was missing / over-doing..

Discovered I was focussing too much on the bassline and trying to make it more complex then it should be.. Very informative and keep it up!

Perhaps as a next tutorial, you could touch on basic track mastering? You have covered grooves, basslines, sidechaining, filter effects and touched on sequences, what about putting it together and take a look at the finishing touches that makes the track sound clean..

I understand a common technique is dropping an audio effects rack onto the master channel, followed by 3 chains within that effects rack with a compressor and EQ Eight to select the cutoffs (hi / mid / low) then adjusting the compressors to fit, however I even after hours of adjusting I still can't get it to sound nice. Do you use this technique often or do you let your audio engineers do the work?

For me, it ends up as a bassy mess or not bassy enough. Working out the balance to that would of course be the key but finding that balance is killing me even after hours of adjusting the thresholds on the compressors..

Anyway ive blabbed too much, if you could touch on that topic it would be tops!

Keep up the great tutorials and even better productions!

Take Care

Marc

Jezper,

Many many thanks for getting me back into composing trance tracks. I used to pioneer on the Amiga years ago. I use Protracker to create pretty famous tunes back in the days. I never found anything as easy to use again until i saw your tutorial. You make it seem easy but i know i will get the hang of this again, my head is full of baselines and tunes again. Thanks for keeping the melodic trance alive maestro , you are the best !
